Scala’s advantages have been appreciated by many large companies – Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Novell, Siemens, GridGain. However, in academic circles this language is still more popular.
The user @platoff in the article outlined his views on the target audience of the language in sufficient detail.
I perfectly understand why Scala attracts inexperienced youth (and they basically want Scala):
• A halo of elitism: really progress in Scala is made by the smartest guys, like, fools don’t write in Scala, and if you write in Scala, then you’re smart. Oops, guys, programming is not about studying at the university, you won’t be a “smarter” programmer than the harder the problem you solve.
• Complexity: Probably many of the Scala fans and amateurs do not understand, nor are they able to articulate, what attracts them to complexity. Someone subconsciously thinks that complexity == power. Like, the harder it is, the more powerful.
A very complex problem can be easily solved by reusing complex solutions. In our case, the compiler should take on as much complexity as possible, simplifying the solution. The Scala compiler is certainly complex, but there is a problem – the language in which this complexity is expressed. It is insanely difficult to use this language.
