The Berkeley Software Distribution license (BSD) is a licensing agreement pioneered to distribute UNIX-like BSD operating systems.
On January 17, 2011, the language development team won a research grant for a period of five years.

The European Research Council gave them about € 2.3 million. In May 2011, members of the Scala community, led by Odersky, founded Typesafe Inc. (renamed Lightbend Inc. in February 2016). The created company was supposed to provide financial support for developers, create services for Scala. Typesafe was supposed to make money on Scala libraries. In 2011, the firm received a $ 3 million investment from Greylock Partners.
